Australian Surfers Were Right About Sunscreen: Why I’d Choose Zinc
Sunlight is not poison, but hours under strong UV still damage skin. Here is why I prefer tested zinc sunscreen without believing every “natural” claim.
Sunlight is not toxic.
You do not need to panic because it touched your face during a ten-minute walk. Going outside without SPF 50 is not the same as smoking a pack of cigarettes.
But spending four hours on a beach under aggressive UV with no protection is stupid. Sunburn is skin damage, however natural and lovely the sun may be.
This conversation became far more complicated than it needed to be. One group wants us covered in sunscreen from breakfast until bedtime. Another group thinks coconut oil and positive energy can replace SPF testing.
I prefer the Australian surfer approach. When the sun is serious, use a thick, properly tested zinc sunscreen that can survive water, sweat and a few hours outdoors.
Quick Answer
For a long beach day, surfing session or any other heavy sun exposure, I would choose a broad-spectrum, water-resistant zinc sunscreen.
I like zinc because it gives strong UVA and UVB protection, often suits sensitive skin and can remain visible enough to show where the coverage has rubbed away.
That does not make every zinc cream safe, effective or friendly to coral. “Mineral” is still a marketing opportunity, and an expensive beige tube can disappoint you just as easily as a cheap spray.
The formula must be properly tested. Then you still have to use enough of it.
Why Surfers Wear That Thick Zinc Stuff
Surfers have a rougher sunscreen test than most of us.
They spend hours under direct sun while UV also reflects from the water. Their sunscreen has to survive salt, sweat, rubbing and repeated trips through the waves.
This is why you often see thick zinc across their noses, cheeks and lips. It may look like war paint, but that is part of its appeal. You can see where it is and notice when it disappears.
A very light cream that feels wonderful in the bathroom may not feel so impressive after an hour in the ocean.
The zinc oxide itself is only one part of the product. The complete formula decides whether the sunscreen spreads evenly and remains on wet skin. If a product claims four hours of water resistance, that claim should come from proper testing, not from a photograph of a surfer holding the tube.
Is Zinc Sunscreen Really Natural?
Zinc oxide is a mineral UV filter. That is where the “natural sunscreen” story begins.
Brands then add leaves, sand-coloured packaging and words such as clean, pure and ocean-friendly. Suddenly you are no longer buying sunscreen. You are buying the spiritual approval of a eucalyptus tree.
Calm down.
Zinc oxide still has to be processed and mixed with oils, waxes, preservatives and other ingredients. Without those ingredients, you would have a pile of white powder that nobody could spread properly.
The number of ingredients is not a useful safety test either. A zinc cream may contain 20 or 30 ingredients once you count everything needed to keep the formula stable. More ingredients can create more chances for irritation, but “fewer chemicals” does not automatically mean safer.
What matters is much easier to understand. Look for a known UV filter, broad-spectrum protection, a real SPF rating and water resistance that suits the activity.
Why I Still Prefer Zinc
My preference is practical.
Zinc oxide provides broad-spectrum protection, meaning it covers UVA and UVB. Thick zinc formulas can stay visible, work well around water and may be easier to tolerate if other sunscreens sting your skin or eyes.
There is also reassuring evidence about skin absorption. Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration reviewed zinc oxide nanoparticles and found that they either do not pass through the outer layer of skin or do so only in very small amounts. Based on the available evidence, the regulator considers approved zinc oxide sunscreen unlikely to cause harm when used correctly. Read the TGA review.
This does not mean zinc has been proven innocent until the end of time. Science rarely gives that kind of promise.
It means we have a long-used filter with a good safety record and very little evidence of meaningful skin penetration. That is enough for me to feel comfortable choosing it.

Conventional Sunscreen Is Not Poison
Choosing zinc does not require pretending every other sunscreen is toxic.
Some organic UV filters have been found in the bloodstream after use. Detection sounds frightening, but it does not prove that the detected amount causes harm.
The technology is improving too. In June 2026, the FDA permitted bemotrizinol, the first new sunscreen active added to its American rules since the late 1990s. Bemotrizinol gives stable UVA and UVB protection with low skin absorption. It has already been used in other countries for years. Read the FDA announcement.
That makes sweeping claims about “dangerous chemical filters” even harder to defend.
A light organic sunscreen may be the better choice for someone who hates white residue and will use it properly every day. A thick zinc formula may be better for someone spending hours in the water.
I still choose zinc for the second job. Preference is allowed. We are buying sunscreen, not selecting a political party.
A Real Example: Surf Mud Ocean Addicts SPF30
Surf Mud Ocean Addicts SPF30 is close to the type of product I mean.
It uses 25% non-nano zinc oxide and claims four hours of water resistance. The brand says to apply it generously 20 minutes before sun exposure, then reapply after surfing, swimming or towel drying. See the Surf Mud product information.
The product is also listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods under AUST L 405179. That is more meaningful than an influencer saying it feels clean. See its TGA listing.
There is one catch. AUST L does not mean the TGA independently tested that exact tube before it went on sale. The company is legally responsible for holding evidence that the product meets Australian rules, and the regulator can request that evidence or investigate the product. Useful reassurance, yes. A holy certificate from the sunscreen gods, no.
I have not personally tested Surf Mud, so this is an example rather than a product review.
Mineral Does Not Automatically Mean Reef-Safe
This is where zinc loses some of its innocent natural halo.
Studies have found that zinc oxide can harm coral and marine organisms under certain conditions, particularly when very small, uncoated particles are involved. That does not prove every finished zinc sunscreen destroys reefs. Laboratory findings do not always copy what happens in the open ocean.
They do prove that “mineral” and “reef-safe” are not the same thing.
Many reef-safe claims are weak because the finished product has never been tested on coral or other marine life. Removing oxybenzone and printing a turtle on the packaging is apparently enough for some brands.
If a company claims its sunscreen is safer for the ocean, look for evidence about the finished formula. Do not award points merely because zinc oxide appears on the label.
Why You Can Still Burn While Wearing SPF 50
People often blame the ingredients when their sunscreen fails. Usually, the explanation is more boring.
They did not apply enough. They missed the ears, hairline, shoulders or tops of the feet. Then they swam, sweated, dried themselves with a towel and assumed the original layer was still perfectly intact.
The SPF number comes from testing with a specific amount of sunscreen. A tiny smear does not give you the full protection printed on the bottle.
The TGA says most people use too little and recommends applying sunscreen generously, then reapplying at least every two hours and after swimming or towel drying. See the TGA application guidance.
Water-resistant does not mean waterproof forever. It means the product met a test for a stated period under set conditions.
Zinc can fail here too. If the cream feels so thick that you use half the needed amount, its beautiful ingredient list will not save your nose.
Do You Need Sunscreen Every Day?
Not under every possible condition.
The UV Index is more useful than sunscreen slogans. The World Health Organization recommends sun protection when the index reaches 3 or higher. At 0 to 2, most people can safely spend time outside without turning their morning routine into a military operation. See the WHO UV Index guidance.
This means a dark winter afternoon in Tallinn is different from midday in Australia. Temperature is not a reliable guide either. A cool, bright day can still carry strong UV.
Check the UV Index. Think about how long you will be outside. Consider whether you will be near water, sand or snow.
People with very fair skin, a history of skin cancer or medication that increases sun sensitivity may need stricter protection. That is a conversation for a doctor who knows their situation.
For everyone else, there is no need to fear the sun. Respecting it will do.
The TGK Verdict
I would choose zinc sunscreen for long beach days and heavy outdoor exposure. Give me broad-spectrum protection, strong water resistance and a formula thick enough to show where I missed a spot.
I would not buy a random “natural” sunscreen because the ingredients sound edible. I would not believe a reef-safe claim without evidence. I would not assume an SPF 50 label can survive three hours of swimming, sweating and towel fighting without another application.
The best formula is the one that suits the job and stays on your skin.
Australian surfers understood the job.
