Arteta already had the strongest defence in England and has responded by collecting so many defenders that even armies are beginning to look understaffed. The squad makes more sense than it did in May, but the scale of the change creates its own problem. De Zerbi has to install a demanding style while deciding how several expensive players fit together, and Tottenham cannot assume that a large fee shortens that process. City still have the money and recruitment structure to recover, but they are replacing the manager who shaped the team and the midfielder who allowed his football to work. Maresca understands Guardiola’s ideas, although last season already showed that City need modifications rather than a careful imitation. [The late interest in Enzo Fernández](https://www.reuters.com/sports/soccer/chelsea-boss-alonso-gives-little-away-on-fernandez-future-amid-transfer-talk-2026-08-20/?ref=theseguysknow.io) makes sense, yet Rodri remains the larger tactical problem. Anderson can carry the ball, compete and improve the midfield immediately, but asking one new signing to replace Rodri’s control would be unfair to him and careless from City. City have also lost far more than Rodri. Tijjani Reijnders, John Stones, Manuel Akanji, Bernardo Silva, James Trafford and Nathan Aké have all left, while Savinho may follow. Some were no longer automatic starters, but removing that much experience in one window means Maresca cannot copy the old structure and assume the habits will survive. I can still imagine City winning because the club recruits too well to dismiss, but this is the first season in years when the prediction depends on the institution more than the team standing in front of us. ### Chelsea have built luxury Brighton for Xabi Alonso Chelsea are easier to understand, even if the squad remains absurdly large. [Xabi Alonso took over](https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/article/xabi-alonso-appointed-chelsea-manager?ref=theseguysknow.io) after [a tenth-place finish](https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/article/reece-james-this-season-has-been-far-below-our-standards?ref=theseguysknow.io), and [there is no European competition](https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/article/pre-season-briefing-2026-27-part-two-fighting-on-three-fronts?ref=theseguysknow.io). Morgan Rogers cost £117 million, while Maxence Lacroix, Geovany Quenda, Marco Palestra, Pep Chavarría, Valentín Barco, Danny Welbeck, Jordan Henderson and Emanuel Emegha have given Alonso several versions of the same team. The spending criticism follows Chelsea even when other English clubs put up similar numbers, although [a reported total around £350 million](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/12028/13546618/transfer-news-summer-transfer-window-2026-premier-league-deals-ins-and-outs?ref=theseguysknow.io) gives people plenty to discuss. What matters is whether the recruitment fits Alonso: Rogers is proven in the league, Lacroix strengthens the defence, Palestra can cover several roles, and Henderson should help impose some order on a young dressing room. Chelsea have become a luxury version of Brighton, buying talent early and trusting that they can sell almost anybody later. I think they can finish in the top four and possibly second if Alonso establishes a clear hierarchy. The lack of Europe gives him more training time and keeps the squad fresher while Arsenal, City and Liverpool recover from midweek matches. Their [suspended transfer ban does not prevent them registering players](https://theseguysknow.io/why-chelsea-avoided-points-deduction/), so the remaining work is choosing the team rather than finding more people for it. ### Liverpool and Manchester United solved only part of their problems Liverpool and Manchester United belong in the same uncertain group for different reasons. Liverpool have Andoni Iraola, [Ronald Araújo on loan](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/liverpool-agree-deal-sign-ronald-araujo-loan?ref=theseguysknow.io) and plenty of talent, but this was not a quiet evolution. Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konaté have left, while Jérémy Jacquet cost £60 million and Víctor Muñoz another £34.5 million. Araújo is a gamble because Barcelona supporters have seen the cycle already: impressive physical defender, convincing early performances, then one match where the decisions become completely disaster. The midfield should have more energy and control, yet the summer looks like another attempt to repair the middle while postponing the question behind it. Rasmus Højlund has gone to Napoli and André Onana is on loan at Trabzonspor, so this is a meaningful reset; I am less convinced it is a complete one. ### The rest of England is spending like Europe’s elite Aston Villa have made one of the more coherent rebuilds after losing Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Donyell Malen, Lucas Digne and potentially Konsa. Johan Manzambi and João Gomes replace athleticism and ball progression in midfield, Zion Suzuki replaces Emiliano Martínez, and Matteo Ruggeri gives them a new left-back. Then there is [Alejandro Garnacho on loan from Chelsea](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/13566112/alejandro-garnacho-transfer-news-aston-villa-sign-chelsea-winger-on-initial-loan-deal-with-conditional-obligation-to-buy?ref=theseguysknow.io), who has changed his haircut more often than his career recently, so this is a useful season for the football to become the main subject again. The unanswered issue is central defence because Konsa was excellent and £51 million is cheap only by the current market’s broken standards. Bournemouth, Brentford and Brighton remain more interesting than several richer clubs because their recruitment still has an identifiable idea. Bournemouth paid £25.7 million for António Silva, which looks unusually sensible for a defender who has already played at Benfica’s level. Brentford spent £39 million on Mamadou Sangaré after his excellent season with Lens. Brighton bought Luka Vušković from Tottenham for £50 million, added Zadok Yohanna from AIK and took the enormous Promise David on loan, continuing their private game of Career Mode with the potential filter turned all the way up. These clubs make mistakes as well, but at least the mistakes usually belong to a plan. Everton have taken a more recognisably Premier League route with Hayden Hackney, Tyrique George, Merlin Röhl, Christian Nørgaard and Brennan Johnson. None of that needs a dramatic presentation, although Hackney and Röhl should improve the midfield immediately and George gives them a winger Chelsea could regret selling. Fulham have gone in a different direction by buying Gonzalo García and César Palacios from Real Madrid, alongside Shea Charles. It looks like a small Spanish Career Mode experiment, and García is good enough that Madrid may spend the next two seasons wondering whether they should buy him back for three times the price. The promoted clubs show how detached English spending has become from the rest of Europe. Coventry have backed Frank Lampard with Caleb Yirenkyi, Carl Rushworth, Sidiki Chérif, Loum Tchaouna, Aurèle Amenda, Taiwo Awoniyi and Frank Onyeka. [Leeds paid £40 million for James Trafford and £34 million for Tarik Muharemović](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/13546618/transfer-news-summer-transfer-window-2026-premier-league-deals-ins-and-outs?ref=theseguysknow.io), with Trafford already giving Manchester City supporters an early reason to ask why he was allowed to leave. Ipswich have gone even further with Abdoul Ouattara, Julio Enciso, Emersonn, Abdul Fatawu, Florentino, Daizen Maeda and several experienced additions. A promoted side can now spend more than clubs trying to win Serie A and still call the window preparation rather than fantasy. Newcastle are the most difficult middle-team projection because Tonali, Bruno Guimarães and Anthony Gordon were three of their best players, and all three have gone. Bazoumana Touré, Aladji Bamba, Amar Dedić and the three new goalkeepers are smart purchases from different leagues, but the Premier League is a cruel place to ask six new players to replace the identity of a team immediately. Nottingham Forest have a cleaner problem: Elliot Anderson generated £116 million, Ousmane Diomande arrived for £34.3 million and Xaver Schlager came on a free. Sunderland have barely replaced the players they sold, so their quiet window looks even stranger beside everybody else’s shopping. Market value is not a predicted fee, especially when a wealthy rival wants a player who still has a long contract, but a package near £85 million remains extremely difficult to justify from Savinho’s City performances alone. Arsenal are my winners, with Chelsea my optimistic second-place call and Tottenham and City close behind. Hansi Flick now has the midfielder most capable of replacing what Sergio Busquets once gave Barcelona, and he is joining a part of the team that was already stacked. Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi add more speed around it, leaving a centre-forward and another defender as the clearest remaining needs rather than urgent holes. Classic number nines matter less in some modern systems, so Barcelona can survive without buying one immediately if goals continue to come from several positions. The defence worries me more because Rodri can control matches and protect the centre, but he cannot cover every transition or solve a weak one-on-one matchup behind him. The attraction of Barcelona is never only the football history either. Spanish supporters enjoy reminding everyone that players move to England for the salaries, which is true, but Barcelona and Real Madrid do not persuade this many stars with museum tours and nice weather alone. Rodri is reportedly earning more than he did at City. The two biggest Spanish clubs remain financial powers even when Barcelona’s accounting makes every registration period look like somebody is trying to finish a puzzle during a fire alarm. ### Real Madrid bought another dressing room for Mourinho Real Madrid have taken the volume approach by adding [Yan Diomande, Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries and Carlos Espí](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2026/aug/15/2026-2027-la-liga-preview-real-madrid-jose-mourinho-barcelona?ref=theseguysknow.io) to a squad that already contained Vinícius Júnior, Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham. José Mourinho has more than enough quality, although he now has to decide who presses, who sacrifices and how many stars he can substitute without creating three days of stories around it. He remains good enough to organise this group, but I do not think the Mourinho of 2026 has quite the same force as the manager who first arrived in Madrid. Madrid needed order after two trophyless seasons and a campaign that ended in dressing-room chaos, which explains why Florentino Pérez returned to the manager he trusts to impose it. The risk is that Mourinho’s authority used to arrive before he said a word; now the players know the entire cycle, the public arguments and the third-season collapse as well as everybody else. Transfer confirmed by Real Madrid. Fee structure reported by The Guardian. Diomande may eventually justify every euro, but he is 19 and arrived after one breakthrough Bundesliga season. [The €125 million guaranteed fee can rise by another €10 million](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2026/aug/05/real-madrid-agree-club-record-115m-deal-for-yan-diomande-and-want-to-keep-vinicius?ref=theseguysknow.io), which means Madrid have priced him as a completed superstar while still buying a large amount of potential. The upside is obvious; the fee leaves no room for a normal learning period. Diomande is not the problem in isolation because Madrid can afford an expensive winger with an enormous ceiling. The problem is that every signing creates another choice Mourinho has to explain. Cucurella, Dumfries and Konaté should strengthen the defence; Bernardo gives them another player who wants the ball; Vinícius, Mbappé, Bellingham and Diomande all expect to decide matches. Somebody has to run when the stars lose it, and that somebody cannot always be Federico Valverde because Madrid have already tried that solution for several seasons. ### Atlético can make this a real three-team race Atlético Madrid are the team I want to interrupt the usual two. [Kang-in Lee adds another clever attacker](https://www.atleticodemadrid.com/noticias/kang-in-lee-signs-with-atletico-de-madrid?ref=theseguysknow.io), [Cristian Romero](https://www.atleticodemadrid.com/noticias/cristian-cuti-romero-ficha-por-el-atletico-de-madrid?ref=theseguysknow.io) and [Alejandro Grimaldo](https://en.atleticodemadrid.com/noticias/welcome-grimaldo?ref=theseguysknow.io) bring experience to the defence, and Julián Álvarez gives them the forward around whom a real title challenge can be built. If Álvarez stays, Atlético should remain close enough to take advantage when Barcelona or Madrid lose control. Kang-in Lee has already looked comfortable in preseason because he can play between the lines without turning every possession into an individual audition. Romero gives Atlético exactly the sort of defender their identity is supposed to contain, while Grimaldo adds progression and delivery from the left. This is not the flashiest window in Spain, but it may be the one that best understands the squad it is joining. Villarreal and Real Betis should remain in the Champions League fight after finishing third and fifth, although Villarreal are changing coaches and that makes another clean season less certain. I do not see either staying in the title race, but they matter because Atlético cannot afford to treat third place as a guaranteed safety net while concentrating on Barcelona and Madrid. I would enjoy Atlético winning it, but Barcelona are the rational prediction because Rodri improves their strongest area while also protecting their weakest. The fee is large because Milan have paid for certainty that the PSG numbers do not quite provide. The logic still makes sense when the squad needed a reliable finisher immediately, and Ramos does not have to become a different player. He needs regular starts, early service and a system that keeps him involved before the match reaches the final 20 minutes. ### Roma, Juventus and Napoli make the top four difficult to call Roma should be in the top-four discussion because Gian Piero Gasperini has a clear way of playing and [Donyell Malen scored 15 goals in 20 appearances before his move became permanent](https://www.asroma.com/en/news/75420/donyell-malen-statement?ref=theseguysknow.io). That continuity matters because Roma are not waiting to learn whether Malen fits. They already know how dangerous he can be when the attack creates room for him to run rather than asking him to spend the match wrestling centre-backs. [Juventus have spent about €137 million](https://sport.sky.it/calciomercato/calciomercato-2026-squadre-acquisti-spese-sessione-estiva-classifica?ref=theseguysknow.io), which puts them back into the conversation without proving that the new pieces form a better team. Napoli have been quieter, but adding Rasmus Højlund gives them another direct striker and the existing squad retains enough quality that writing them off because the window produced fewer headlines would be a mistake. Italy has one clear favourite and five clubs with reasonable top-four arguments, which is why the title pick feels safer than the Champions League predictions. ### Como are no longer a novelty Como remain the most enjoyable possibility after they [finished fourth, qualified for the Champions League and kept Nico Paz at the centre of a smart project](https://theanalyst.com/articles/serie-a-predictions-2026-27-opta-supercomputer?ref=theseguysknow.io). Their 29 goals conceded were the best defensive record in Serie A, while Trevoh Chalobah gives them more experience in a part of the team that already works. This is not a fashionable attack trying to hide an ordinary defence; Como have built the part that usually collapses first when a smaller club moves up the table. The Champions League schedule is the complication because the squad now has to repeat that concentration every few days, and opponents will no longer treat Como as a pleasant surprise. Even so, the board has made enough smart decisions that another step should not be dismissed as novelty. I am not predicting a Leicester-style title, but second place is no longer a joke, and it would be easy for people to call the rise obvious next May after dismissing it now. Inter are the pick because stability matters more in Italy than another exciting shopping list. The goals were not simply the result of Harry Kane carrying an ordinary attack. Michael Olise led the league with 19 assists, Luis Díaz remained dangerous from the other side, and Bayern scored in all 54 of their competitive matches. There is no obvious weakness large enough for another German club to build a prediction around. They then paid around €50 million each for Ismaël Saibari and Nathaniel Brown, adding another attacker and cover for an often-injured Alphonso Davies. Brown should protect the squad from one of its recurring availability problems, while Saibari adds another player capable of arriving around Kane rather than waiting for him to create everything. I am tired of picking Bayern as well, but boredom is not evidence that another team can close a 16-point gap. ### Dortmund made the window’s most interesting bets Borussia Dortmund have at least bought players capable of making the challenge less predictable. Niko Kovač has added two Greek creators with different routes: [Giannis Konstantelias from PAOK](https://www.bundesliga.com/en/bundesliga/news/borussia-dortmund-sign-giannis-konstantelias-from-paok-38652?ref=theseguysknow.io) and [Konstantinos Karetsas from Genk](https://www.bundesliga.com/en/bundesliga/news/borussia-dortmund-sign-konstantinos-karetsas-genk-greece-38222/?ref=theseguysknow.io). Konstantelias is the one I most want to watch because he can carry the ball, combine in small spaces and give Dortmund some imagination against teams that sit deep, while Karetsas is the younger and less predictable bet. Dortmund finished with 70 goals and conceded only 34, so the base under Kovač is better than another vague promise that the attack will become exciting. The problem is the scale of the task: a 73-point season was respectable and still left them 16 points behind. Dortmund need the Greek signings to solve stubborn matches without losing the defensive discipline that made them the nearest challenger. ### Stuttgart and Hoffenheim deserve more attention than Leverkusen The fight underneath should be stronger than the routine Bayern-Dortmund-Leverkusen order suggests. Stuttgart finished fourth on 62 points, Hoffenheim were one point behind and Leverkusen were sixth with 59, so putting Stuttgart and Hoffenheim ahead follows last season’s table rather than club reputation. [Freiburg reached the Europa League final last season](https://www.uefa.com/uefaeuropaleague/news/02a5-20ac3759bba4-7f91e47690b9-1000/?ref=theseguysknow.io) and deserve more respect in the European race, although their minus-six league goal difference shows why a cup run does not automatically make them a Champions League side. Borussia Mönchengladbach supporters hoping for a return to that competition will need a much larger improvement after 12th place and 53 goals conceded. ### Schalke are back, but survival comes first [Schalke are back after three seasons away](https://www.bundesliga.com/en/bundesliga/news/welcome-back-schalke-promotion-muslic-dzeko-karaman-37116?ref=theseguysknow.io), with Edin Džeko and Kenan Karaman central to the promotion. Džeko gives them experience and a reliable target, but the Bundesliga will punish a team that expects the emotion of promotion to cover structural weaknesses. Survival would be enough for the first season because the club has already supplied its supporters with more relegation drama than anybody needs. Bayern should win, Dortmund are the only convincing title challenger, and Stuttgart and Hoffenheim are my more aggressive top-four calls. A team that averaged 68.9 per cent possession and scored 74 league goals has strengthened from a position of control. That control was less crushing than the possession figure suggests because Lens scored 66 times and kept the title race close. Lens finished second, won the Coupe de France and then [beat PSG 1-0 in the Trophée des Champions despite playing for a long period with ten men](https://www.lequipe.fr/Football/Actualites/Lens-domine-le-psg-malgre-une-longue-inferiorite-numerique-et-gagne-son-premier-trophee-des-champions/1711563?ref=theseguysknow.io), with Florian Thauvin scoring the winner. Repeating that level under Dino Toppmöller while playing Champions League football will be harder. [Lens have changed coach and lost Mamadou Sangaré to Brentford](https://theanalyst.com/articles/ligue-1-predictions-2026-27-opta-supercomputer?ref=theseguysknow.io), while opponents will prepare for them as a contender rather than a surprise. They still scored at nearly PSG’s level and defended a lead against them with ten men, which gives the challenge more substance than one famous win. ### Monaco and Lyon made the more interesting bets Monaco have produced the most interesting window outside Paris, with [Matthis Abline](https://www.asmonaco.com/en/news/35-metre-lob-stade-louis-ii-scientist-nine-things-to-know-about-matthis-abline?ref=theseguysknow.io) looking like a clever striker bet and [Mathys Detourbet arriving on loan](https://www.asmonaco.com/en/news/mathys-detourbet-joins-the-rouge-blanc?ref=theseguysknow.io) as another young attacker. Keeping Lamine Camara would matter as much as another signing because Monaco already have enough attacking talent and need the midfield to remain stable around it. They should finish in the Champions League places, although the new coaching setup under Filipe Luís adds uncertainty. [Lyon’s loan move for Loïs Openda](https://ligue1.com/en/articles/l1%5Farticle%5F5575-return-redux-openda-joins-ligue-1s-revenants?ref=theseguysknow.io) is one of my favourite deals in France because his first Leipzig season showed how dangerous he is when given confidence and space. Lyon do not need him to become a patient possession striker. They need the fast, direct version who runs beyond defenders early, makes the pitch longer and gives the rest of the attack room to play. ### Lille and Strasbourg depend on who stays Lille remain dangerous if Matias Fernandez-Pardo and Ayyoub Bouaddi stay and Hamza Igamane regains full fitness. Bouaddi is especially important because selling the midfielder would remove the calmest part of a young team at the moment it needs continuity. Strasbourg have repeated their usual model of selling several players and replacing them with another group of young bets, so they should remain interesting even if continuity is never the point there. The model produces players and transfer profit; whether it produces a team capable of surviving a difficult winter is a different question. ### Marseille have to replace 48 goals Marseille worry me more because [Mason Greenwood’s €39 million sale to Fenerbahçe](https://www.reuters.com/sports/soccer/fenerbahce-sign-greenwood-marseille-39-million-2026-07-14/?ref=theseguysknow.io) removes 48 goals from his 81 appearances for the club. Selling one forward does not erase the rest of the team, but the attack now needs several players to replace a level of production it had grown used to receiving from one source. Marseille have not changed enough elsewhere to make that problem disappear, which leaves them behind Lens, Monaco and Lyon in my current order. PSG are the prediction, with Lens as the most credible challenger and Monaco and Lyon in the next group. Lille can join them if the final days of the window do not remove the wrong players, while Marseille need to show where Greenwood’s goals will come from. ## The biggest transfers in Europe These three confirmed deals capture the most expensive parts of the 2026 market. Chelsea and City paid heavily for players already proven in the Premier League, while Real Madrid paid the same kind of money for Diomande’s potential after one Bundesliga season. Those fees still do not decide who had the best window because Tottenham improved more positions than Chelsea, Arsenal strengthened from a position of strength, and City’s largest arrival came with Rodri leaving. The transfer window remains open. ### ## Final verdict Arsenal, Barcelona, Inter, Bayern and PSG are the title picks because each begins with more continuity than its nearest challengers. Arsenal have strengthened the best defence in England, Rodri improves an already excellent Barcelona midfield, Inter have fewer structural questions than their Italian rivals, and neither Bayern nor PSG has lost enough ground to make a different winner the sensible prediction. The challengers make this preview less comfortable because Chelsea are my optimistic second-place call in England, with Xabi Alonso receiving a deep squad and no European schedule, while Tottenham may have improved more than anybody but must integrate an enormous amount of change. Atlético can challenge if Julián Álvarez stays, Como have earned the right to be taken seriously, Dortmund should be more creative, and Lens have already shown that PSG can be beaten.
