- Description: Seedance, WaveSpeed, ChatGPT and GPT Image are different parts of the AI chain. Here is how to name each one correctly and compare what you are paying for.

You can't tell if a platform is expensive or a model is expensive, because most sites don't bother to say which one you're really paying for. Seedance, WaveSpeed, ChatGPT, Midjourney, and GPT Image all get called "AI tools," but only one of those is a real tool.

## Quick answer

| Term | What it means | Simple example |
| ------------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **AI model** | The trained engine that interprets an input and generates an output | Seedance 2.5 or GPT Image 2 |
| **AI tool or app** | The interface or feature you use to complete a task | ChatGPT, an image editor or a face-swap tool |
| **AI platform** | A larger service combining models, tools, workflows and billing | WaveSpeed or Higgsfield |
| **AI provider** | The company that serves the model, runs the generation and charges for access | OpenAI directly, or WaveSpeed serving another company’s model |

**The quickest way to separate them is:**

**You use a tool → inside a platform → which gets a model from a provider → to create the output.**

One company can perform several of these jobs, so do not expect every brand to stay politely inside one box.

## What is an AI model?

An AI model is the trained system doing the generation. ByteDance calls [Seedance 2.5](https://seed.bytedance.com/en/seedance2%5F5?ref=theseguysknow.io) an audio-video generation model, while OpenAI calls [GPT Image 2](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/models/gpt-image-2?ref=theseguysknow.io) an image-generation model. If two sites offer Seedance 2.5, the underlying model may match while the price, speed, settings and moderation differ. Confirm the exact version rather than trusting the large logo beside it.

## What is an AI tool or app?

The tool helps you do a job; for example, ChatGPT is a product and interface for writing, analysing files, or generating images. GPT Image 2 is one model that may power an image task inside it. Calling ChatGPT a model will not summon the terminology police, but “ChatGPT versus GPT Image” is not a clean comparison.

Web and desktop versions are also interfaces, not separate models. I use WaveSpeed because it is easier than assembling every workflow locally, although its web interface can expose more tools than the desktop version at a given moment. The model can remain identical while the menus change.

## What is an AI platform?

A platform groups model selection, tools, workflows, storage, APIs and billing. [WaveSpeed says it offers more than 1,000 image, video, audio and language models](https://wavespeed.ai/models?ref=theseguysknow.io), so “I generated it with WaveSpeed” does not tell us which model made it.

Higgsfield belongs closer to this category too. Its glamorous effects can feel like one giant generator, but the experience and engine are separate. Name both: **Seedance 2.5 through WaveSpeed**, for example.

## What is an AI provider?

The provider gives you access and bills the generation. OpenAI can be both maker and provider of GPT Image 2\. WaveSpeed can provide a model built elsewhere. ByteDance Seed developed Seedance, while its [launch announcement](https://seed.bytedance.com/en/blog/one-take-creation-flexible-referencing-introducing-seedance-2-5?ref=theseguysknow.io) described several access routes.

This is why “who made it?” and “who did you pay?” can have different answers.

## Can the same AI model cost more on another platform?

Yes. One provider may charge per image, another per video second, and another through credits that become a small maths exam at the worst possible time. Resolution, duration, audio, references, queue priority and failed-generation policy also change the bill.

On 4 September 2026, [WaveSpeed listed](https://wavespeed.ai/pricing?ref=theseguysknow.io) Nano Banana 2 at **$0.07 per image** and Seedance 2.0 Fast at **$0.10 per second**, with settings affecting the final charge. [Midjourney’s plans](https://docs.midjourney.com/hc/en-us/articles/27870484040333-Comparing-Midjourney-Plans?ref=theseguysknow.io) started at **$10 per month for 3.3 Fast GPU hours**. You cannot compare those numbers until you calculate the cost of the same useful output.

**Before calling one option cheaper, check five things:**

1. The exact model and version.
2. Resolution, duration, audio and reference inputs.
3. Whether billing is per output, second, token, GPU minute or subscription.
4. Whether failed attempts and unused credits still cost money.
5. What the price includes: interface, editing, storage, API access and support.

## Is running an AI model locally always cheaper?

No. Local generation removes the platform’s per-run charge only when the model’s weights and licence allow local use. You still pay for the GPU, electricity, storage, installation, updates and your time. If you own suitable hardware and use the same open model heavily, local can be cheaper. If you create occasionally or jump between models, a platform can cost less in real life.

For me, WaveSpeed is the easier option. Saving a few cents on one generation loses its charm when I have spent an evening installing nodes and discovering that one dependency has decided to become an independent nation.

## How to describe any AI product correctly

Ask four questions:

**What exact model created the output?**

**Which tool did I use?**

**Which platform organised the workflow?**

**Which provider ran it and charged me?**

The useful label is normally “**model through provider/platform**.” That is why our [AI video generator comparison](https://theseguysknow.io/best-ai-video-generators-2026-tested/) names both the model and where we ran it, and why our [10-second AI video cost test](https://theseguysknow.io/how-much-does-ai-video-cost/) records the settings too. Without those details, a quality or price comparison is mostly branding with a decimal point attached.
